TikTok Shop affiliate income: what to declare in the US and the UK

Updated Oct 26, 20263 min readBy the Double Éveil team

Your first commissions are coming in, and so is your first obligation. Commissions and products received for promotion are taxable in both countries. Here's what to know. This isn't tax advice: for your own situation, ask an accountant.

United States

Point Rule
Type of income Self-employment income (commissions and the fair market value of products received for promotion)
Self-employment tax Due when net self-employment earnings reach $400 in a year: 15.3% (Social Security and Medicare), via Schedule SE, on top of income tax
Form 1099-K Sent above $20,000 and 200 transactions
Form 1099-NEC / 1099-MISC Sent above $2,000 from 2026 (was $600)
Quarterly estimated taxes Expected if you'll owe $1,000 or more for the year

Not receiving a form doesn't make income tax-free: you report everything.

United Kingdom

Point Rule
Gifts The value of products received for promotion counts as income
Trading allowance £1,000 of income a year (before expenses) without telling HMRC
Above £1,000 Register as a sole trader for Self Assessment, and deduct the £1,000 allowance or your real expenses (not both)
Registration deadline 5 October after the end of the tax year in which you started (the tax year ends on 5 April)
VAT Only above £90,000 of turnover over 12 months

In both countries: keep records

  1. Commission statements from your creator center.
  2. Dated screenshots of each collaboration's terms.
  3. The list of products received for free, with their value.
  4. Your expenses (equipment, software), with receipts.

Watch out

Employed? Check your contract allows a side activity. If in doubt about your situation, an accountant will save you more than they cost.

FAQ

Do I need a business to be a TikTok Shop affiliate?

TikTok doesn't require one to join. In the US, you're self-employed by default; in the UK, above £1,000 you register as a sole trader for Self Assessment.

I didn't get a 1099. Do I still declare?

Yes. The forms depend on thresholds, but your income is taxable whether or not you receive one.

Is a free sample taxable?

In both countries, a product received in exchange for promotion counts as income, at its market value.

Our method: this lesson relies on TikTok Shop's official pages and public guidance, checked on the dates shown. Rules change: Seller Center and the TikTok app are the final word. This is neither legal nor tax advice, and no earnings are promised. Some links are affiliate links, always labelled: if you subscribe through them, you pay nothing extra and we earn a commission.
