How to choose a product to sell on TikTok Shop: the six filters

We ran about a hundred product categories through our filters to build our course. Almost none passed them all. That's the point: rule out bad ideas fast, before you put money into them. Here's the full method.

The six filters

Filter	The question	The threshold
1. Allowed	Do TikTok Shop and the law allow it?	Prohibited: out. Restricted: documents required
2. Margin	Selling price ÷ landed cost	4x or more: GO. 2.5x to 4x: RISKY. Under 2.5x: NO-GO
3. Competition	Among the first 16 non-sponsored Amazon results, how many have over 1,000 reviews?	0 to 3: room. 4 or more: locked
4. Shipping	Can it ship from your country on time without shipping eating the margin?	Over 2 kg (4.4 lb) or 60 cm (24 in) folded: quote first
5. Season	Does it meet a need in the next 60 to 90 days?	No: postpone or change
6. Repeat (bonus)	Do customers buy it again?	Breaks a tie

Our method

Filter 1 comes from TikTok Shop's rules and the law. The thresholds of filters 2 to 6 are rules of thumb from our tests, not laws: they help you avoid mistakes, they guarantee nothing.

Five real cases (September 2026)

Regulation pickleball net: quote of $76 plus $89 of freight, for a product selling for €77 to €90 in Europe. NO-GO on margin and shipping.
Carbon pickleball paddle: about 2.5x before TikTok Shop fees, many cheaper offers delivered in 1 to 3 days. NO-GO.
No-tie shoelaces: 13 offers out of 16 have over 1,000 reviews. Locked market.
Radiator reflector: half of the first 16 results have 600 to 1,300 reviews. Too crowded.
Cooling pillow: about 3x, but tested at the end of September. Wrong season.

These were measured on European marketplaces: redo them on Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk before relying on them, markets move.

What is a winning product on TikTok Shop?

There's no guaranteed winning product. A product that passes our six filters deserves a test, with no guarantee of sales.

Must a product pass all six filters?

The first five, yes. The sixth (repeat purchase) never decides alone: it breaks a tie.

How many products should I test?

Our method: run 3 products through the filters, and accept at least one NO-GO.
